10 Ways Janet Jackson Changed The Industry

This past Friday, The incredible founders of the Janet’s Legacy Matters Movement outdid themselves with the release of their months long anticipated video entitled “10 Ways Janet Jackson Changed The Industry”. This video issued receipts unlike no other. From beginning to end, the video proved that Janet Jackson was indeed the blueprint to many of the newer generation’s artists.

The video starts off with Matt Laur saying that Janet is the most successful artist in Billboard history. Her dominance was something that hasn’t been seen since her older brother Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Many artists dubbed her a legend. A legend is someone who can walk into a room and command attention without saying a word. You don’t believe me, check out the BET Awards when Janet just walked out onto the stage and everyone lost their minds.

Janet Jackson proved time and time again that she was a force to be reckoned with. She has become a huge role model for young girls and boys who go through trying to find themselves. She stands up tall and doesn’t tolerate any abuse especially in the form of racism, prejudice, and bigotry.

The huge issue that Janet faces today is feminism. Everyone knows that women in general have a hard time when it comes to achieving things that come easy to me. But Janet and half of the women that make up the world’s population have something other than being a woman that holds them back. Being a black woman or woman of color, Janet has faced racism along with feminism when it comes to being acknowledged for certain awards or making history. It seems the biggest snub for her recently has been the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She has been eligible since 2007 and has only been nominated twice. Why hasn’t she been inducted when her career states that she should have been in a long time ago? Why has so many of her peers who have been inspired by Jackson, been inducted. Many of Jackson’s fans, claim that it is because she is a woman of color.

Debbie Allen recounts that during the Control Era, Janet stated through her music that she had enough. She decided to speak up for herself while in the same instance speak up for other women. Mariah Carey stated that Control was one of the most classic albums and that she took videos to another level. For Janet, she has always been one to use her music to speak on so many instances, which may include things she’d gone through in life or things that others have gone through.

This video put together by Lamont Hicks and Christopher Lendon, not only shows how Janet changed the industry, it also shows how one woman changed so many lives in the process. Janet knew how to take situations and feelings and not just sing about them, but come up with resolutions of change. This video was what the world needed to see now that people have Janet’s name in the spotlight to only discredit her and to make up rumors of why she isn’t an icon, a legend, and THE BLUEPRINT. To discredit a woman who has given her life to her career, not just to make money, but to create change in the world is crazy.

Just because her last name is Jackson doesn’t mean anything other than she was born into a musical family. Janet’s hard-work and love for her fans speak for itself. To quote a line from Janet’s song The Great Forever she’s “Living her life the way that she wants and it’s leading her to the great forever. She means that she is doing what she wants, following her own path to happiness. It is so sad and heartbreaking that people have to always rain on her sunshine.

Janet is doing what she wants, living how she wants and doesn’t really care what people have to say. She knows that her fans love and support her through it all. That bond is unbreakable.

Here is the video that should be shared…

  1. She has Always been the BEST overall female entertainer of all time!! She truly deserves to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!

  2. This video only tells a small portion in a big way, of how incredible, and prolific Janet is. She has a story so powerful that it starts back when she first stepped out onstage to perform with her family. Though she should’ve been inducted decades ago, Janet does not need a Rock N Roll Hall of Fame Induction to define her. When I see Rappers like Tupac or NWA who had a lesser impact on popular music, or R&B music, style, trendsetting, I shake my head in disbelief. No that they were not talented, but the fact that the R&R Hall of Fame members used these two Rap Genre’s inductions to pacify the African Americans who could easily say, well they were black, at least they let a black Rap Group or Rap artist in….and in all honesty it was a slap in the face to say the least because they don`t even have her complete bio and body of work listed on their page. I am sure, in Janet’s own humble way, she is not bothered by it, as I am sure this is nothing new that she has had to face in her illustrious career, and it won’t be the last. She will always be an ICON and LEGENDARY in the eyes of her fans….and for those who think that her legacy doesn’t matter, well whenever another female artist wins an award or gets publicized for their work, you can always look at Janet’s body of work and say, wow….Janet did that.
