As we take a look at our nation, there is a severe need of unity. There are a lot of things happening that in the eyes of our ancestors, the nation should be passed. Unfortunately, the nation is nowhere near ending all of the unjust that is continuing to happen today.
Donald J. Trump is our 45th president. Considering how he got into office, it’s no surprise as to how he’s running things. I have come to the realization that he is our leader for the next four years. What I am not comfortable with is how divided our country is.
Trump signed what seems to be a record number of executive orders. He has ended so many things, I am unsure he knows the consequences of the aftermath. One thing he recently signed was lifting the ban former President Barack Obama had in place to prevent mentally ill individuals from carrying guns.
I am not sure why he would want to put a gun in a person’s hands, who is not capable of understanding what the consequences are. But this is the same guy who hasn’t read The Constitution.
Watching President Trump reminds me of an album from 1989. Janet Jackson released Rhythm Nation after Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and herself saw news stories about The Stockton Playground Murders.Patrick Purdy shot up a California school playground killing 5 children before turning the gun on himself.
Janet, Jam and Lewis wanted to write a positive song focusing on the “nation” they seen in dance clubs. Here is what Janet told the Los Angeles Times…
“I was reading about all these clubs and I thought it would be great if we could create our own nation,” Jackson told the Los Angeles Times. “One that would have a positive message and that everyone would be free to join.”
The video created a new look for Jackson and introduced her military-style dance moves she became famous for. The video won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography and the Soul Train Music Award for Best Music Video.
In an interview with Michael Jackson, he said that Janet called to ask if she could use the military-style dance she saw in Michael’s short film Captain EO in her video for this song. Michael refused at first since he wanted to do a video with all the dances in military style, but he eventually let Janet use it.
Rhythm Nation was a song calling for unity. If we stand in unity, maybe the violence would stop. But in 2015, there was still a need of unity. Janet released Unbreakable with a few songs with the same messages as Rhythm Nation. With the song Black Eagle, it has another view from Rhythm Nation. It digs deeper and asks the question How would you feel if it was you? She also states that we all need to do better.
This clearly states that there is still work to be done. There is still a lack of unity in our nation. Why some are trying to erase a legacy that is all about unity and peace is beyond me. Why can’t we all take Janet’s message and spread it? Let go of the hatred and become unified.
